Where does innovation come from? Maybe hustle

At the recent Internet Librarian conference I had a chance to get caught up with some friends. We were all in management positions of some sort or another and the conversation lead to innovation. How do you create anĀ environment where innovation can occur? When you hire, what are the attributes that you want in your new staff? I am readingĀ a book called “Dreaming in Code”. It’s a case study on a programming project and its evolution. They talk a little about hustle. This intangible quality that some athletes have to always try as hard as they can no matter the outcome. To be constantly looking for opportunities to change the game. To work just as hard in practice as they will on game day. I don’t think managers can manufacture hustle in others. It’s a quality of the individual but when hiring or looking to create an innovative team it is something I will consider in the future.
I like how Helene Blowers emphasizes that innovation starts with “i”
It really implies that the individual is always contributing to their surroundings, whether they realize it or not.
